July Weekend

With Evie and her family, I suggested we try snorkeling at Beach House Beach. The girls did get to see a turtle up close, but it really was too rough. So we drove to Poipu Beach Park to play on the tombolo (sand connecting to a small island).

Development in Poipu certainly isn’t like in Maui, but it’s definitely there. You don’t usually see it because you’re in it, but when you walk out at Poipu Beach Park and look back, there it is:

Leilani had a week-long music camp at Bandwagon Studio, and had a recital on Friday afternoon. The kids really liked to get together and make music. Actually, it was really impressive what they learned and practiced in just one week. Evie also takes piano lessons and jumped at the chance to play a bit in one of their session rooms:

Evie also stayed for a sleepover, and in the morning, Leilani showed her how to make pancakes. That’s the deal at our house: if you want to eat pancakes on the weekend, you make them yourself.

The girls in the tree-house, in the Royal Poinciana tree in bloom.

First attempt at a primitive solar dehydrator (but I still think I need to built my sophisticated one). Bamboo lashed together with twine (see Japanese square lashing), held square with some wires, reflective drip pan made from foil, cover made from screen. The fruit dries on stainless steel racks, and there is a recycled window that sits on top to keep the rain away.

The dogs like to finish our beers:

Makauwahi Cave

Posting the 1/2 year old photos inspired us to visit the cave. (This time we checked the opening hours first.)

Kealia again

Andy alone on Kauai

After Leilani’s recital she got these flowers

Andy picked the Surinam Cherries and made juice

Andy planted the WiliWili Trees at the dog park – they are growing beautiful by now, I hope to post photos of them soon again

This was the last backpost of the year 2016, but I have quite a few from 2015 to go.

Mahaulepu and Makauwahi Cave Reserve

We went there January 9th, first we cooled off at the beach

Then we visited the tortoise sanctuary. Tortoises often outlive their owners and they find a new home here, where they graze between native plants.

I would not trust Julie to leave the tortoises alone… I wish she had a less strong hunting instinct

Sadly the cave was closed, but at least the trails were open.
