IT and plumbing

No, this is not about Leilani, but maybe it will make a few of my old friends who read this laugh, at least if the remember my job as data-janitor at Sun.

There is a letter to Dear Abby today, stating: “…there is actually a shortage of skilled tradespeople these days. IT jobs pay well and are constantly in demand. As my grandmother used to say, Everyone needs a plumber when the toilet’s clogged.” (I’m not making it up, go to DearAbby.com and select today’s date)

And it goes on…. And Dear Abby answers. Although I must say, they were not talking about Information Technology, but Internet technology: “…cosmetology or skilled trades, such as Internet technology and carpentry…”

The sad part is, it is fully true, and the pay shows it. If I’d outsource the few web design projects I have it would cost me about $1000 for a guy in India full time for a month, and everyone but me seems to do it too. On the other hand if I’d hire a cleaning lady for an hour a day for a month I’d pay $1000 (inc. tip, exc. Sundays).
