The last day of our Salzkammergut trip we spent in Hallstatt












The Hallstätter Beinhaus – ossuary is a building to serve as the final resting place of human skeletal remains. Burial space was scarce in Hallstatt. The bodies were first buried in a temporary grave, then after some years the skeletal remains are removed, bleached by the sun, painted and placed in an ossuary. The greatly reduced space taken up by an ossuary means that it is possible to store the remains of many more people in a single tomb than if the original coffins were left as is.




We went to the museum, and stayed almost 2 hours but did not photograph a lot. (Photos of many exhibits in the museum can be seen on the linked page)



I want to cook Ritschert – but a vegetarian version…
